Imali smo set autorskih pjesama i set pjesama grupe The Doors koji smo svirali utorkom u Saloonu.
To smo i napravili.
Siniša Banović, sadašnji bubnjar engleske grupe Fischer-Z, nekad Grad, Let3 i Fit. Dara iz Sexe. Kralj iz Termita. Rundek, Capri i Bara, zajedno u grupama Haustor i Cul-de-sac.
ENGLESKI PRIJEVOD
Can you introduce yourself and tell us something about yourself?
My name is Goran Polak. I am a resident of the Republic of Peščenica. For your readers who don’t know, Peščenica in Zagreb is like the Vatican in Rome. I’m a failed musician and not-so-literate writer, still trying to finish my first and last book. A little crazy. A bit silly. I am an old man who simply does not want to accept his age.
You manage the Stražarni Lopov (The Guard Thief) page, which is dedicated to the music scene of the 70s and 80s of the former Yugoslavia, where famous names such as Haustor and Dorian Gray are mentioned, as well as the underground such as Trobecove Krušne Peći (Trobec’s Brick Oven). Can you tell us more about the Stražarni Lopov, as well as the very idea of such a site?
Stražarni Lopov is actually a dedication to the people, not to the music scenes of the former Yugoslavia. The blog consists of my stories about growing up, from the sixties when I was born, to the present day. Along with the stories, I also created a kind of interactive picture of the time I lived in, which consists of audio and video recordings of various bands, photos, texts from magazines, posters… In essence, everything that seemed interesting to me. I got most of the materials that make up that interactive image from the people who are part of that image. In each blog post, it is written who participated in its creation. I’m usually just the one who collected all the materials and packaged them nicely in the post.
The basic idea of Stražarni Lopov is to leave a small mark on the time in which we lived.
Along with Stražarni Lopov, you run the Jesus Loves The Stooges page, which is dedicated to the artists Iggy Pop, the Stooges and the MC5. From what I hear, you own a huge amount of footage, that you were contacted by a close associate of director Martin Scorsese regarding the Stooges’ induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
I have the largest collection of their recordings, which contains many rarities, so many foreigners have contacted me about various projects. I had a special pleasure working with the English record company Easy Action on some exclusive releases of The Stooges and with French television, from which I received their master recordings of interviews with Iggy Pop and Wayne Kramer from the MC5 group.
Unfortunately, my Jesus Loves The Stooges page no longer exists on the web. I made it some 15 years ago and it was placed on the T-Com web space that I had with them all those years in my package. A month ago, they sent me a notice that they were canceling my web space. All those 15 years of my work were simply deleted by T-Com in one second, because someone there decided that way. I wrote to them, but they had absolutely no understanding of me and my internationally accepted work. Now, you could place the page on a new web space, but its address would no longer be the same, so all the posts of its old link that are in various places on the web would no longer be valid. JLTS has a cult status in the world among collectors of Detroit rock music, the link to it was on a bunch of American and English websites, everything that I built for years was demolished, and now I’m too old to go and build it all from the beginning in the same way .
Still. After I finished The Stooges, I decided to make a Jesus Loves The Stooges blog, where I would put everything that was on the website. With the concept of a blog, I will most likely be able to express all this even better. I won’t be limited by web space, so I’ll be able to put a lot more content.
In addition to writing, you were active as a musician, as a member of the bands Endymion and Yola Yola. Please tell us more about these bands, and are there any other bands in which you were active?
I started playing with my first bands back in 1981 in high school. We mostly held concerts in local communities, municipalities, schools and at various events in city squares. The first of the more specific bands from that phase was called Nebesko šetalište. The music was some rock in the style of the Stones. Just when we started getting a little more serious, at the Gaudeamus competition of rock bands from all over Yugoslavia in the crystal hall of the Inter-Continental Hotel, we won third place and made our first recordings in the studio of Radio-television Zagreb in Šubićeva Street, I discovered the English group Bauhaus, met Dee Dee , left Nebesko Šetalište (The Heavenly Promenade) and formed the band Venda with him. The music was a mixture of punk and alternative. With Vend, I played in real clubs for the first time, such as Moša (today’s Boogaloo) and the Student Center (SC). We also had a big independent concert in a hall in Remiza, I don’t remember what it was called. That band lasted until my army, with the fact that in the last phase we changed our name to Psiho Lab and played pure punk. In essence, we were supposed to be called Psiho lab from the beginning, but there was a demo band with a similar name, Psihomodo pop, so we gave up on that at first. After the army, I played with Born, who had a recording studio in Pantovčak, and drummer Goco. The band was called Halloween. We didn’t have concerts, we only recorded with the sound engineer Vatroslav Mlinar and it didn’t last long. Goc went to the band FOS, and I founded Endymion alone with Denis Đimoti. Endymion was my first really serious band. We recorded and released the promo album “Scenes De La Vie Future” on cassette. They appeared on the “041” compilation of Ljubljana’s FV Založba. The promo photos were taken by Lidija Mataja and Igor Kelčec, the official photographer of Azra. We were on a mini-tour in Croatia with the German band Ambos. At an independent concert in Cologne, we were offered to release our first album in Germany. To which we agreed. I finally played Kulusic, which was my dream as a kid.
In the 1990s, we recorded most of the material for the record, we participated in the filming of a short film at the academy, we made new promo material with Kelčec’s photos. It all looked as if something would come of it, but the war started and nothing came of it.
While the war stopped a little in 1992, I played in the Sunshine Inn band with my brother Igor, who was also in Endymion, Vjeran from Greasebals and Jožo from Brojan. We played some wacky covers of other people’s songs. We had rehearsals at the Ritz club in Petrinjska, and we performed in places like Saloon, Rock Club, Gjalski Castle… After that, I was in a band with Igor, mostly composed of members of Soul Fingers. It was a gathering of really professional musicians, so I, as a non-musician, gave up after a few concerts. You know the one, tone rehearsal, Grah plays jazz on the trumpet, the saxophonist plays Bach, and I strum the bass like Sid Vicious.
Basically, at that time I decided I wasn’t going to play at all anymore. But the bass player of Soul Fingers gave me a tape with two songs by Yola Yola and asked if I would play with them. I told him that I don’t like being with anyone anymore, but when I listened to the tape, those two songs were so good that I immediately agreed. It was some garage punk, good lyrics, interesting vocals, and on those two songs, Renato Metessi from Zvijezda (The Star), who I respect as a true rocker, was a guest on the verse. I played with Yola Yola until 1994. We had a set of original songs and a set of The Doors songs that we played on Tuesdays at the Saloon.
In 1994, Tomi from Phantasmagoria asked me if I would join his band. He had an arranged concert with Majke (The Mothers) and the group Grč (The Spasm) in Rijeka, and his band was in disarray. At that time, the singer Yola Yola left Croatia for a long time, so guitarist Mišo, drummer Slaven and I joined Tomija in Phantasmagoria, rehearsed the material and went to Rijeka. While we were returning to Zagreb from Rijeka, I completely broke down on the train. I came home, plugged the bass into the amp, played a few notes and put it on the rack. I called Tom and told him I was giving up playing. And so my bass sat on that stand for 25 years, plugged into an amplifier, without playing a single note on it. I was just dusting it off. Mišo has continued to play in Phantasmagoria to this day. As I am a friend of the band at all their performances, Slaven came to one concert in 2019 and after a few beers the idea was born to reunite Yola Yola in the same line-up, to release an LP and to continue where we left off. That’s what we did. The album is already 80% recorded. Most of the material on it is new songs, which I would define as psychedelic garage punk. In parallel with Yola Yola, I created and recorded songs for the album “Hodam, gledam, prolazim” (I walk, I look, I pass) with various musicians under the name Stražarni lopov i Dobri Ljudi (The Guard Thief and Good People).
How did you come up with the idea for the album “Hodam, gledam i prolazim”, which musicians are participating and what can we expect from the album?
The idea came from a short conversation about transience and leaving a physical mark on the time we spend on this planet. There are thirty musicians on the album. Siniša Banović, current drummer of the English group Fischer-Z, formerly Grad, Let3 (Flight3) and Fit. Dara from Sexa. Kralj from Termiti (Termites) . Rundek, Capri and Bara, together in the Haustor and Cul-de-sac groups. Apart from Bara, Trobecove krušne Peći also produce Vinski and Bega, and Haustor also produces Santro. And then Kilmister, Čalić and Korozija from Majke. Igor Djeke from Discipline Kicma (Spine Discipline). Razorblade Jr. from the group Gone Bald. Franz from Peach Pit and Šumski. Franz also plays with Bar in Brujači (The Buzzers). Stanko Kovačić used to be in Sin Albert, Stampedo, now Šumski (Forest). There are also all the members of Yola Yola, Labe, Sale, Mišo and Slavc. From my Endymion are Denis, Žika and my brother Igor, reinforced with Iva Gruden, Irena and Bibiana. So Zdena Franjić, Igor Mihovilović, Rujana Jeger. My son Tin. American punk rock legend Sonny Vincent also takes part in the album. Some of the musicians are on only one song, and some are on more than one. I’m the only one on all the songs. I made the mix of the album together with Filip Sertić in his Studio DEPTH, and the design of the LP and CD covers with Igor Mihovilović.
I don’t know how to answer the last part of your question. If you look at the people I made the album with, you will see that they are musicians who never made compromises in their music. Their hearts were always ahead of the couple. “Hodam, gledam i prolazim” is just such an album. There is no calculation. The songs on it differ musically. There is free jazz, punk, garage rock, reggae, blues, alternative, psychedelia, goth, and a bit of classical, but as everyone who has listened to it says, the album works perfectly as a whole. I have already released it in a limited edition on vinyl and CD, and it will appear digitally on all music listening platforms on May 26th. It will be possible to listen there for free. Take fifty minutes of your time for that. Mostly because of all those musicians who left a part of themselves on the album. I am sure that the songs we created will not leave you indifferent.
Finally, what are your future projects? What would you say to our readers?
A few years ago, I decided to publish one record and one CD, write one book, draw one comic, paint one picture, oil on canvas, and play one more big concert in my lifetime. I hope that, apart from the painting, I will do it all by the end of this year. And for further. This year, Yola Yola will certainly finish the album, which, considering how long the LP press is waiting, will be officially released next year.
I have a couple of finished songs that didn’t make it onto the album Stražarnoj lopop i doba meni, and I would also like to make a couple of new ones. He would record those songs with some musicians who, due to the limited space on the LP, I did not ask for their collaboration. Of course, he would again include some musicians with “I walk, I look, I pass”.
My great wish is to organize a big gathering of all the weirdos I know and all those who like the blog Stražarni lopop once a year in Boogaloo or Močvara, so they would like to join that gathering. Maybe book promotion would be ideal for the first such session. As soon as I finish the book, I have to get active again with the Stražarni Lopov. I received a bunch of different material, and because of the work on the album and the book, all of it has been on hold for more than a year.
And what would you say to your readers? Someone wrote “smoke weed, drink beer, remember you only live once” on the building where I live. That’s the first thing that comes to my mind. Well, I’ll try to come up with something smarter………. Unfortunately, I can’t.
