Uselio sam ubrzo u zapušteni stan gdje sam intuitivno i neopterećeno počeo stvarati crteže, pisati poeziju i davati značenje postojećim predmetima.

On spaja više medija zbog čega ga prije mogu svrstati u novomedijski kontekst. Iako u sebi sadrži i filmske principe, Picaferaj to nije.
Imao si izložbu “Ja sam san – Eggo Dream” u galeriji Kvart, samim time tu je zanimljiva angdota u vezi tvoga oca.
Član si benda “Koji Bend?” kojeg čine tvoji kolege iz Kuće Sunca, a riječ o spoju rap/hip hop, rock glazbe i spoken worda.
Bend smo pokrenuli prijatelj Jerko Gudić i ja.
ENGLESKI PRIJEVOD
To begin with, could you introduce yourself and tell us something about yourself?
Hello Hrvoje. Although my name is Dino, many people know me under the pseudonym Kralj Sunca (King of the Sun). In addition to names, I also like to label myself as an artist, while I either avoid other labels or choose them very carefully.
You have been engaged in art (poetry, performances, films, music) for a long time under various names such as Koji Danotte, Kroki, Kralj Sunca. What motivated you to do art, what are your influences as an artist, and the reason and meaning of your artistic pseudonyms.
I believe that if an artist “lies” in you, art will knock on the door, regardless of whether you ask for it or not. When I realized that I wasn’t going to play football professionally, I had a hard time finding passion in other fields. Apart from intensive listening to music and watching movies, I couldn’t find a satisfying life path. I therefore decided to go to the central Dalmatian city, Split (from Knin), with the intention of “doing” the season and buying a film camera. Going into the unknown was a big turning point in my life, in which I first faced the charms of independent life. I soon moved into a run-down apartment where I intuitively and unencumbered started to create drawings, write poetry and give meaning to existing objects. This is how I conceptualized my living space and called it the House of the Sun, which today enjoys the status of a cult place, where artists and creatives gather, most often the marginalized ones. It didn’t happen overnight, it was a lifestyle in which I received a wide range of people in my house every day, who finally had a place to express themselves, without anyone judging them, and at the same time encouraging them with feedback. This is where we come to my hierarchically most influential artistic archetype (or pseudonym).
Kralj Sunca is a kind of symbol and icon of the Kuća Sunca (House of the Sun), which opens the door to possibilities and creates a platform for artistic talents.
Not to go too far, pseudonyms in my case are archetypes, emphasized parts of personality that are expressed through certain artistic media. The set of all archetypes form one whole, one artist, one person, me Dino Grčić.
In 2019, you published your first poetry collection “Koji Danotte”, so I would like to ask you to tell us more about your poetry collection.
The collection “Koji Danotte?” is another important milestone on my path, both in life and in the artistic context. By publishing a book of poetry that I wrote for five full years, I broadened my horizons towards other media, which were created on the template of the aforementioned collection. The act of publishing encouraged me in other fields and encouraged me to further artistic development. It was a big deal for me, to publish a book and share a deep intimacy with readers. I have published three books so far, and several of them are in the archive waiting for their moment to be published.
You can also get your copy online or through me in person.

Your films Picaferaj, Slavuj (Nightingale) were shown at various festivals, and they are experimental films, so tell us more about them, as well as about the people who worked on the film.
“Slavuj” is my film debut, which premiered at the “Zlatna Vrata” ( Golden Gate) movie theater in the summer of 2021. It’s been a long time since it was released, and it seems to me that as time goes by it acquires an extra patina that makes it even more charming. The film was shot in black and white, it has a musical character, and the simplicity and purity achieved in the film satisfied my artistic aspirations. The great musician Luka Ivoš, who excelled in the role of the lead singer – Slavu, and the talented filmmakers Jadran Parunov – responsible for photography and advice, and Toni Wagner – responsible for editing, participated in the film.
Picaferaj, on the other hand, is something completely different. It’s not about a movie, but about a series that takes place in sequels. It combines several media, which is why I can rather classify it in the new media context. Although it contains cinematic principles, Picaferaj is not.
The first installment of the new season was recently released, filmed at the Knin fortress, and a new episode will follow soon. Many people participate in the project, so it is ungrateful to list them under these circumstances.
You had the exhibition “Ja Sam San – Eggo Dream” ( I am a Dream) in the Kvart gallery, so there is an interesting anecdote about your father. Can you tell us more about the exhibition itself, as well as about the angdota itself?
Ja sam San – EggO dream is my first solo exhibition that took place in the contemporary art gallery “Kvart”, in Trstenik, Split.
It is clear from the title that the exhibition dealt with the ego, which was strained to the limit in the gallery in those days. One of the wishes was to overemphasize one’s own artistic ego, in such a way that the space was filled with portraits and self-portraits of the character of the Sun King (through multiple media). In this way, I created the image of one personality, which I relativized at the same time. The central act of the exhibition was the performance of my coming out of the egg model. I came out naked speaking poetry, ready for a new aesthetic and a new period of life.
An anecdote with my father is that he was surprised that, as a non-academic artist, I managed to arrange an exhibition in an established gallery.
You run the association Kuća Sunca (The House of the Sun) where, in addition to holding exhibitions, you also do podcasts with various people, so I’m interested in how you came up with the idea for the association, as well as for podcasts?
Kuća Sunca is first and foremost a poetic concept based on a raw understanding of art and passionate creativity. In an instant, there was a need to create an association that I phonetically and philosophically separated from the action of the organic concept, in order to protect the original thought from bureaucratic entanglements and possible complications in interpersonal relations. The association was started by several people from the collective, and five of us made up the high council. The association disbanded when the position of the majority of the high council began to move away from the original thought of the original concept. The association now operates (without me) under a new name and has nothing to do with the Kuća Sunca.
The idea for the podcast came naturally. A significant number of people circulated through the Kuća Sunca, so in agreement with Roman Sole, the editor-in-chief of “Online live tv Croatia”, I decided to start a show that, at first glance, may look like a podcast, but in fact it is a hybrid of an interview and a reality show. and performance. It takes place every Thursday for two and a half years. It is difficult, almost impossible to count who has passed through the ether.
You are a member of the band “Koji Bend?” which consists of your colleagues from Kuća Sunca, and it’s about a combination of rap/hip hop, rock music and spoken word. Tell us more about Koji Band?”.
What a band! is the mother band of Kuće Sunca, created in the very beginnings of the collective. The band was started by my friend Jerko Gudić and me. In the beginning, we were a hip-hip duo that rapped on beats – “downloaded” from the Internet. Koji band? (with a question mark) was in nature a request for cooperation, and our catchphrase was “We are the question, and you are the answer”, the result of which is the current “Koji Band! (with an exclamation mark), precisely because we upgraded the band and got the answer to the question in the form of top musicians. Today we are a five-member band, and soon you will be able to enjoy our new video for the song “Eskim”.
In addition to all of the above, you write for the Solin Live portal, where you publish your columns. What exactly do you write about in your columns?
The columns I wrote on the Solin Live portal are sketches from the life I led in the center of Split. I transferred the stream of thoughts to paper, using the autochthonous Dalmatian dialect, observing and commenting on the reality around me. My columnist activities are currently on hiatus, for the reason that I am occupied with other ambitions, and “Truth is a document” has come to an end. It will certainly be available in book form one day.
Finally, what are your future projects? What would you say to our readers?
I am currently working on a video clip for the song Kojeg Benda! – “Eskimo”.
I am also preparing a second solo exhibition that will be held in the Maritime Museum in Split. The opening is scheduled for the first of February, but work on it starts much earlier. I am also planning a new short film, but it may be too early to announce it. I will continue with my life and artistic activities, and I would tell the readers to get involved in the realization of their dreams, or at least to start in that direction, because we often don’t even know what we want until we start…
